Russian doomsday cult

The last remaining members of a Russian cult, who had barricaded themselves inside a cave, waiting for the end of the world, have come out.

The eight men and a woman left the cave reportedly overcome by the stench from the bodies of two people who had died. Thirty-five followers of self-declared prophet Pyotr Kuznetsov entered the cave, in the country’s central Penza region, last November.

They had threatened to blow themselves up if police tried to remove them. A local official quoted by Interfax news agency said the remaining members had decided to leave because there was a “threat of poisoning from toxic corpse fumes”. Reports of the two deaths emerged last month. One man who left the cave on 1 April said one member had died from fasting and the other of cancer.

Thirty-five cult members initially went into the cave, about 650km (400 miles) south-east of Moscow. Most emerged gradually, but a few remained inside defying police pleas to leave. The sect, who call themselves a devout splinter group of the Russian Orthodox Church, believes doomsday will occur this month.

Mr. Kuznetsov, who calls himself Father Pyotr, declared himself a prophet some years ago and has attracted followers in Russia and Belarus. He did not join his followers in the cave, and has been receiving treatment in a psychiatric clinic. He has been charged with setting up a religious organization associated with violence.

Isn’t it another sign on how dispirit people have become to believe just …anything!

Texas sect girls mostly mothers

More than half of the teenage girls removed from a polygamist sect in Eldorado, Texas, are either mothers or currently pregnant, US officials say.

All 463 children on the Yearning For Zion Ranch were taken into care after allegations of sexual abuse prompted police to raid the ranch this month. Officials from the sect deny that any children were abused at the ranch.

Authorities believe that of the 53 girls aged between 14 and 17, 29 are already mothers and two are pregnant. “It shows you a pretty distinct pattern, that it was pretty pervasive,” said Darrell Azar, a spokesman for the Texas Child Protective Services.

And then we act like we cannot understand what happened in Austria. What about these women?

DNA tests on sect children

A Texas judge has ordered that 416 children, removed from a polygamous Christian sect in police raids, remain in state custody for genetic testing.

Welfare officers had told the judge they had been unable to determine which parents the children were related to. The ruling comes after officials said some of the girls may have had babies when they were just 13 years old. The closed community was first raided amid reports that a 16-year-old girl was physically and sexually abused.

Detectives are looking for evidence of a marriage between the girl and a 50-year-old man. She is reported to have been beaten and raped by her older husband and to be pregnant again eight months after giving birth to her first child when she was 15.

And all these suppose to happening in the name of God!!!

The polygamy custody hearing

The US judge deciding the fate of 416 children removed from a breakaway Mormon sect has struggled to control a first chaotic day of custody hearings.

Judge Barbara Walther had to suspend proceedings for an hour to allow hundreds of lawyers for the children and their parents to view evidence. Lawyers argued whether the Texas case violated religious freedom rights.

Police raided the ranch last week after receiving reports that a 16-year-old girl had been sexually abused. “The court is not in the position and certainly does not intend to rule about someone’s religious practices and their freedom of religion,” said Judge Walther.

She was forced to suspend proceedings after just 40 minutes amid the objections, in what is reportedly the largest child-welfare case in US history.

“What I’m trying to get to is whether or not these children should be returned to their parents or whether there’s enough information that they need to be retained in the custody of the (child welfare) department,” she said.

It is sad to separate kids from their mothers but the life and the future these kids had was even sadder!
