Sea Shepherd

ImageIf you travelled to a small pier at the bottom of Ann Street in Williamstown, a bayside suburb of Melbourne, Australia, you would come across a small letterbox with the words “Sea Shepherd” painted over it. Next to the letterbox is an old shed that has seen much better times with an open gate leading to two ships, the Steve Irwin and Bob Barker moored and being outfitted for a future yet unknown maritime mission.

For a highly controversial direct action marine conservation society, best known for the direct action it has been taking against Japanese whaling ships in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica, security is extremely lax on the pier. In fact tours are offered of the MV Bob Barker every week while it is having a major fit-out.

One thing that will strike anybody making the effort to take the tour is how well organized Sea Shepherd really is. Although the crew has attracted many people of different nations serving on one of the four Sea Shepherd ships, the members appear to be very highly motivated, coordinated, and ready to get into harm’s way for the causes they believe in.

So are these people society’s last real heroes, or degenerative eco terrorists and criminals, as would some authorities have the public believe?

Panathinaikos volunteers support

For football lovers all around the world Panathinaikos name is associated with the prestigious Athenian football team and basketball in Europe is imminently connected with Panathinaikos basketball team. A sports club that has raise generations of athletes with international recognition.

But Panathinaikos is much-much more than a sports club is. From its foundations at 1908 Panathinaikos has united Athenian ideals far beyond the physical experiences. The Athenian philosopher Socrates said: “Sound body makes for a sound mind” and Panathinaikos simply practices the teaching.

Since 1908 Panathinaikos club and its members and followers have been part of the Athenian culture and participated in hundreds cultural events all around Greece. Most importantly they were there in times of need. Panathinaikos was there when people were dying from starvation during the Nazi occupation, they were there during the resistance and they were there during the dictatorship with tens of dead, tortured, imprisoned and exiled. And they were there when the hospital for kids with cancer was built and they were there when natural catastrophes hit and they are there this moment with the homeless and needed.

Panathinaikos football club and Panathinaikos basketball club are internationally known but Panathinaikos is not just that. Panathinaikos is hundreds joined parts that cover form gymnastics to classic athletics and from fencing to archery. And all these athletic parts of Panathinaikos are amateur and volunteer. And this moment they need our support. Time to give back some of what the club has done for more than a century.

Signed jerseys from athletes will be auctioned through e-Bay and all the money will go for the support of these volunteer departments of Panathinaikos aiming to support young people in confusing times to keep a “sound body that makes for a sound mind”

Prof. Emanuel L. Paparella’s: Aesthetic Theories of Great Western Philosophers

aesthetic_theoriesProfessor Emanuel L. Paparella – familiar to all the readers of Ovi magazine – is the writer of the book: “Aesthetic Theories of Great Western Philosophers” Ηιs second book with Ovi. In twenty chapters, twenty philosophers study the evolution of art and aesthetics.

Borrowing the author’s words from his prologue: “The students complained that they found the reading hard going. Some of them had never taken a philosophy course before. In an attempt to alleviate their difficulties I decided to attempt a simplification, a sort of Ockam’s razor of several entries and definition of aesthetic theories as outlined in Wertenberg’s anthology.

“I simply eliminated the reading themselves, although I left quite a few quotes from each philosopher or artist and focused rather on simplifying and explaining their theoretical thinking and definitions of Art. In other words, while the inspiration for those notes came directly from the text itself, my function as a commentator was that of simplifying, as best I could, the complex aesthetic theories of the great philosophers of Western Civilization and thus make the students more aware of the rich aesthetic tradition of Western Civilization as expressed philosophically.”

And at least for me he succeeded to his aim 110% and if you think that I exaggerate I challenge you to read the book.

Professor Ernesto Paolozzi’s “Benedetto Croce: The Philosophy of History and the Duty of Freedom”

CroceOvi presents Professor Ernesto Paolozzi’s new book titled: “Benedetto Croce: The Philosophy of History and the Duty of Freedom.”

Benedetto Croce was an Italian idealist philosopher, and occasionally also politician. He wrote on numerous topics, including philosophy, history, methodology of history writing and aesthetics. He was a prominent liberal, although he opposed laissez-faire free trade, and had considerable influence on other prominent Italian intellectuals including both Marxist Antonio Gramsci and fascist Giovanni Gentile. That according to Wikipedia.

But Benedetto Croce was much much more and this is the much more that is what Professor Ernesto Paolozzi, Professor of History and Philosophy at the Suor Orsola Benincasa University, Naples and member of the Italian Commitee for historical studies, introducing us in his book.

Note that the superb translation from Italian is from Dr. Massimo Verdicchio; Professor of Italian at the University of Alberta, Canada and the introduction to the book is written by Professor Emanuel L. Paparella, director of the summer study abroad program for University of Central Florida and Broward College.

Two new additions for Ovi bookshelves

I have mentioned many times how important are the Ovi bookshelves for us. It is part of our identity and what makes Ovi magazine what it is. A crossroad of ideas and knowledge. And this crossroad is in the middle of the internet highways which mean that millions can access these ideas and knowledge; furthermore they can download it in the form of an eBook always for free.

Somehow looking at the titles of the books we have published the last nearly nine years and knowing the themes I wish somehow millions could reach them. Actually nowadays with all the tablets frenzy it will be a very good addition to their “pocket” libraries.

For this month we have two new additions in the Ovi bookshelves. Both books are about philosophy but written in a way that there is no academic cryptic; books fulfilling the aims of Ovi, to share ideas and knowledge with everybody.

The first book is written by Professor Ernesto Paolozzi titled: “Benedetto Croce: The Philosophy of History and the Duty of Freedom.”Benedetto Croce: The Philosophy of History and the Duty of Freedom

A horse saying moo

French firm mislabelled horsemeat. What? It was saying moo accidentally? A horse learning foreign languages? Impossible especially if it was a French horse!

However and according the news, “French meat processing company Spanghero knowingly sold horsemeat labelled as beef, the French ovigovernment has said. Spanghero’s licence is being suspended while an inquiry continues, Agriculture Minister Stephane Le Foll said. The firm has denied the allegations, saying it only ever dealt in meat it believed to be beef.  A widening scandal over mislabelled horsemeat has affected at least 12 European countries.  In the UK, three people have been arrested on suspicion of fraud in connection with the sale of horsemeat.  Two suspects were detained at a meat processing plant near Aberystwyth in Wales, and a third was arrested at an abattoir in West Yorkshire.”

The Works of Arman Nobari

ovicover_11_02_13Check Ovi magazine and a new arrival for the Ovi team! Arman Nobari and his work is HERE!

“I come from a very culturally mixed background and upbringing, with stories of my relatives escaping Iran in the 70’s, or experiencing racism in the United States during this same time. Many of my pieces attempt to interact with the dialogue between cultures – comparing and contrasting with the 1st and 3rd world, showing how vastly different we are, yet also how incredibly similar. I bridge the culture-gap through emotions, as everyone regardless of their upbringing or culture can understand fear, love, happiness, and remorse.

I taught myself how to paint when I was 19, and started painting fulltime when I was 20. By using minimalistic features in my artwork, I leave a lot to the viewer to “fill in” – I believe this creates the same sensation as a nostalgic memory, further increasing how deeply someone is able to connect to my work.”

More to come from Arman soon including paintings and articles.
