That summer by Abigail George

ovicover_06_08_17‘Let’s go out tonight. My treat, Ingrid.’ Amanda said, with palpable excitement in her voice.

‘But what’s the occasion, Mandy?’ a rather withdrawn and serious Ingrid asked.

‘Ingrid, there doesn’t have to be an occasion to go out and eat at a fancy restaurant during the week.’

‘Oh, Ingrid,’ said Mandy with an urgency in her voice. ‘It doesn’t have to be your birthday or an anniversary or a promotion or something like that. When you live in a city, people go out and eat all the time. There’s no room for the mentality of a small-town brain like yours anymore. You have to think out of the box now. You’re living in Johannesburg now.’ Amanda laughed. ‘You’re such a mouse. You should meet Scotty’s Samuel. He’s also a mouse. Mouse people belong to mouse people. I’m a cat person.’

Yes, Ingrid thought to herself. I’m living in Johannesburg now. After all, I’m a city girl now, so, I should act like one.

‘What was growing up in Swaziland like?’ asked Ingrid, glancing up at Amanda while she perused the menu of the fancy Italian restaurant.

‘Boring but I had my freedom. Should we have wine with our supper, Ingrid.’

‘No, no wine for me, Mandy. To do what.’

‘What? What did you say, Ingrid?’

‘You said you had your freedom. I asked, the freedom to do what.’

‘To go about and do as I pleased. Sometimes me and my best friend in high school, her name was Susan, we’d sneak off and play truant or meet boys or smoke, I guess.’

‘Everybody does that,’ said Ingrid.

Playing the Antitheses or the World Against the Wortd by David Sparenberg

Playing the Antitheses or the World Against the Wortd
a complex exercise and performance piece of oppositional speech,
movement & energy exchanges for two players

(The more practiced, the more creative this exercise can become; working toward performance ready perfection. Use devices of fast and slow, degrees of facing toward and degrees of facing away. Increasingly become aware of and play with the intention(s) of speech, orientation and movement. Bring structure and improvisation into dynamic harmony. The purpose and guiding inquiry of The Antitheses is to explore how each participant feels about the presence of the other—a presence that at one time will be a mirror, at another time an independent counterpoint. Along with rhythmic time, tempo, you will want to work with the preparation effort or quality of non-action between actions at the Pause and Walk Around sequences.)

Those Eyes by Hunter Dasten

Can you peer through those eyes?
The radiance must be blinding.
As I gaze into them I’ve come to understand
what the ancients must have felt,
looking up toward the shimmering night sky.
All the mysteries and wonders of life
are clearly reflected, as is the light.
And even if I’d never be sure
just what chemicals kindle a stars faithful burn.
I would still spend every night
dreaming up poems about your eyes.

If you were mine by Abigail George

If you were mine
(for my paternal grandparents)

ol01_400_01Perhaps this is how
my grandparents met. Perhaps, this too,
was their love song.

So, I say your name.
Mikale – but for the life of me you can’t
understand why I’m

reaching out to you like this. Why I
find you interesting (and sensitive).
Your face and hands,

wise, interesting (and sensitive)
inside your leather jacket. In your presence, I’m tongue-tied. Don’t
know what to say.

So, I talk about
everything and nothing at the same time. I think about
the fact that I don’t swim anymore.

I think about the fact
that you’re a man, who lives and builds and breathes and eats
with the desire of a man.
